India vs Southeast Asia Hotel OTA Strategy

A decision framework for adapting hotel distribution, payments, merchandising, and measurement across India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Quick answer

There is no defensible universal OTA winner for every hotel in India or Southeast Asia. Build the regional strategy from the property's booking-source data, official destination arrivals, current channel contracts, guest-facing offer checks, payment acceptance, and completed-stay contribution. Validate each country and property separately.

Editorial note: Reviewed on 18 August 2026 using official tourism, payment-infrastructure, and company sources. Payment-rail availability is not evidence of guest preference, and regional statistics do not establish a property's channel mix.

How should hotel OTA strategy change between India and Southeast Asia?

Keep the measurement method consistent, but localize the evidence. For each property, combine its channel funnel and completed-stay economics with official destination arrivals, current contracts, payment and settlement capabilities, guest research, and a like-for-like storefront audit.

Avoid replacing evidence with regional stereotypes. A payment rail can be widely available without being the preferred checkout method for a particular hotelโ€™s guests. A large OTA brand can operate in a market without being the best incremental channel for every property.

A regional evidence matrix

MarketUseful public evidenceProperty evidence still required
IndiaOfficial UPI capabilities and transaction statistics; tourism releasesChannel mix, guest payment choice, net payout, cancellation and conversion
IndonesiaOfficial destination arrivals; regulated payment informationProperty source markets, accepted methods, settlement and refund workflow
ThailandOfficial tourism data; Bank of Thailand PromptPay informationGuest payment choice, acquiring support, channel contribution
MalaysiaOfficial tourism and payment-system informationProperty funnel, currency and settlement costs, channel contracts

Public sources inform questions. The property data decides the allocation.

1. Map demand by stay date and source market

Use official arrivals to identify source markets worth investigating, then confirm them in completed reservations. Segment by property, room type, stay date, lead time, length of stay, and purpose only when the source data supports it.

Do not translate country-level arrivals directly into an OTA budget. Visitors may book through many routes, and destination statistics do not identify the booking channel.

2. Audit channels without declaring a universal winner

For each priority OTA, record sellability, final price, offer terms, listing accuracy, cancellation, completed stays, and net contribution. Keep dates, occupancy, currency, device, login state, room, meals, and policies identical during guest-facing comparisons.

MakeMyTrip Limited lists MakeMyTrip and Goibibo among its brands. That supports the corporate relationship, not a fixed market-share or audience claim for one hotel. Apply the same evidence boundary to other OTA groups.

3. Design payments for acceptance and reconciliation

NPCI documents UPI as an Indian payment system and publishes its transaction statistics. The Bank of Thailand documents PromptPay and Thai QR Payment. These are reliable facts about payment infrastructure, but they do not prove that every international traveller expects or can use those methods.

Ask four operational questions:

  1. Can the target guest complete payment?
  2. Can the property identify and reconcile the payment?
  3. How are refunds, disputes, deposits, and failed payments handled?
  4. What currency, acquiring, settlement, and conversion costs apply?

Separate availability from preference

A local payment method belongs in the technical options list. Promote or prioritize it only after checkout data or guest research shows that it reduces abandonment for the target segment.

4. Localize the offer, not the truth

Translate room and policy information accurately, display the settlement currency clearly, and merchandise amenities that the property genuinely provides. Verify taxes, inclusions, cancellation, check-in requirements, and refund timing for each market.

Do not invent nationality-based preferences. Test merchandising hypotheses using search terms, enquiries, booking notes, support questions, and post-stay research collected with appropriate consent.

5. Allocate inventory using net completed-stay contribution

Use a consistent channel scorecard: completed room revenue minus commission, property-funded discounts, payment costs, refunds, and relevant variable stay costs. Add cancellation rate and operational workload as separate decision inputs. Keep an experiment log and change one material lever at a time.

Limitations

Regional public data cannot disclose a hotelโ€™s property-level demand, OTA ranking, negotiated fees, or payment preference. Confirm commercial and technical details in current contracts, partner accounts, acquiring documentation, and finance reconciliation.
